Coffee rust

Hemileia vastatrix

Coffee rust (Hemileia vastatrix) is a phytopathogenic fungus that severely affects coffee plants, especially Coffea arabica. It appears as yellow spots on the upper side of the leaves and orange-colored pustules on the underside, where spores are produced.

The infection causes premature leaf drop, reducing the plant’s ability to photosynthesize and weakening its development. In severe cases, it can significantly reduce fruit production and may even lead to plant death.

This fungus thrives in humid environments with temperatures between 16°C and 28°C, and its spread is facilitated by wind and rain.It is considered one of the most destructive coffee diseases worldwide.
